Azithromycin 200mg Suspension - Patient Information
USAGE
Azithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat specific bacterial infections in children. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
IMPORTANT:
· Antibiotics only treat bacterial infections. They are not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.
· Using antibiotics when not needed can lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
· Dose as Directed: Always give exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The dose is carefully calculated based on your child's weight and the type of infection.
· Once-Daily Dosing: Usually given once a day.
· Shake Well: Shake the bottle vigorously for 10-15 seconds before each use to ensure the medication is evenly mixed.
· Complete the Course: It is crucial to finish the entire prescribed course, even if your child starts to feel better sooner. Stopping early can allow the infection to return.
· Do Not Exceed: Never give a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss a dose, give it as soon as you remember, but if it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule.
INDICATIONS (Common Bacterial Infections Treated)
· Middle ear infections (otitis media)
· Throat infections (strep pharyngitis/tonsillitis)
· Sinus infections
· Community-acquired pneumonia
· Some skin and soft tissue infections
SIDE EFFECTS
Common (Usually mild and temporary):
· Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain
· Loss of appetite
Contact Your Doctor Immediately if your child experiences:
· Signs of an allergic reaction: rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing.
· Severe or watery diarrhea (may be a sign of a new intestinal infection, C. difficile).
· Severe stomach pain, unusual tiredness, or yellowing of eyes/skin (signs of possible liver issues).
· Irregular heartbeat or chest discomfort (rare, but serious).
DRUG INTERACTIONS (Key Point to Discuss with Doctor/Pharmacist)
· Inform the doctor about all other medicines your child is taking, including antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium). These should be taken at least 2 hours before or after Azithromycin, as they can interfere with its absorption.
STORAGE
